Project Overview

Together Housing Association are one of the biggest housing associations in the north of England, managing 38,000 homes mainly across Lancashire and Yorkshire. Recognising the need to provide new, affordable housing, traditional building methods alone are not going to get there so there is a need to do something different. Osco Homes bring an innovative approach utilising offsite time and quality benefits with truly integrated social value.
The project was for the design and build of 8 semi-detached bungalows for affordable rent in South Kirkby, a former coal mining town 12 miles SE of Wakefield. The site was a blight on the neighbourhood, neglected and abandoned, surrounded by housing with tight access. Previous attempts to redevelop it failed due to cost and so working in partnership with Osco Homes a number of changes were made to align it with a lean and manufacturing based approach.
The bungalow floors, walls and ceilings were built within a factory, using a light gauge steel structure, externally complete including the fitting of windows, doors. Internally they were open panel.
The approach reduced disruption for the residents whilst helping to address the skills shortage and make our communities better places to live.
