More modular housing could be on its way to Mid Devon, the councillor in charge has revealed.
Unlike traditional properties, modular homes are factory-built before being transported to site where they are installed and connected to services.
Two modular social housing developments were agreed earlier this year in Tiverton and Cullompton, replacing areas occupied by council-owned garages. The company producing them, Zed Pods, claims they are "built to higher standards than conventional houses."
Now further developments could be on the way, a meeting of Mid Devon District Council was told on Wednesday [31 August].
Councillor Stuart Penny (Conservative, Yeo), cabinet member for housing, says feasibility studies have been completed for six new schemes ahead of a pre-planning submission, with "more to follow."
These include locations at Bampton and Hemyock, with the schemes likely to be submitted to the district council's planning committee for consideration before the end of the financial year - subject to advice and feedback.
In addition, members were told the council has agreed in principle to buy the one-bedroom Zed Pod demonstration unit showcased last year in Cullompton.
Cllr Penny says this is for a "discounted price" and that a potential location for it has been identified on council land in Willand. Plans have been shared with local councillors for feedback ahead of a further planning application being submitted.
The combined 14 flats, designed to be net-zero carbon, are for social rent and will be allocated through the Devon Home Choice system.
Asked when people can expect the sites to be completed, Cllr Penny says "significant progress has been made" in both locations, including garage demolition and asbestos removal, but he added modular builds require a "significantly condensed period" on site.
Groundworks will begin at the Cullompton project in September, with the Tiverton development to follow later in the year. The council expects the schemes to be completed by the end of December or early in January, he said.
